Slow network performance when ghosting an image over the network using Broadcom NIC - ThinkCentre A51, A51p, M51, M51e, S51
Symptom
Transfer rate may drop to 30 to 70MB/per minute when ghosting an image over the network. In some instances ghosting a 2GB image file may take up to 3 hours to complete. This is observed when ghosting an image over a Broadcom BCM570x NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC when using Symantec’s Norton Ghost 8.0. When ghosting an image over a network using the combination of the on-board Broadcom BCM570x NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet controller and Symantec’s Norton Ghost 8.0 or above can result in slow network performance. This is due to unavailability of adequate buffer memory resource within the 640KB base memory for the Broadcom BCM570x NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet controller to utilize. Symantec’s Norton Ghost 8.0 will use more resources within the base memory than previous versions of Symantec’s Norton Ghost.
Affected configurations
Any of the following ThinkCentre systems running DOS as the operating system and configured with an on-board Broadcom BCM570x NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller:
No hardware should be replaced for this issue. If using the NET START command to start the services use NET START BASIC instead to start the basic redirector to free up space in base memory. Use extended-memory managers to load applications or device drivers in extended memory (starting at the 1-megabyte boundary).
