USB optical drive may disconnect after a failed attempt to format a disc - ThinkPad / Desktops
Symptom

After a failed attempt to format media, the system may experience unusual behavior. The symptoms are:

  • The computer will not recognize disc changes.
  • The computer cannot read data from a disc.
  • The icon in My Computer for a disc does not change at eject.
  • Windows AutoPlay stops working.

If the user attempts to format dirty, damaged, or worn out media, the format will fail. This is correct behavior on invalid media. A message is displayed to the user saying that the format failed, either due to media damage or due to a general failure. After the invalid media is removed from the system, one of the following unexpected behaviors may occur.

  • The computer will act as if a blank disc is still in the drive.
  • The computer will act as if a disc containing unreadable data is in the drive.
  • The computer will not read other discs inserted into the drive.
  • The computer will mount writable media as read only.
  • The computer will not activate Windows Autoplay.
Affected configurations

Any of the following systems running Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP configured with Drag-to-Disc (DLA) version 5.1 or 5.2 :

  • ThinkPad systems
  • 3000 Family notebooks
  • ThinkCentre systems
  • 3000 Family desktops

and one of the following USB Multi-Burners:

  • USB Multi-Burner Plus field replacement unit (FRU) number 40Y8694
  • Accessory part number 40Y8638, 40Y8670, 40Y8671, 40Y8672, 40Y8673, 40Y8674 , 40Y8675, 40Y8676, 40Y8677, 40Y8678, 40Y8679, 40Y8680, 40Y8681, 40Y8682, 40Y8683
Solution

This is a limitation for all versions of Direct-to-Disc (DLA) 5.1, and DLA 5.2 versions thru build 21G. A fix has been implemented in the newer version of DLA.

Rebooting the computer without bad media in the drive restores normal operation. Discard the bad media.
