Cannot use DVD MovieFactory to create DVD or BD with WMV video files - ThinkStation C20, C20x, E20, E30, ThinkCentre A85, M70z, M71z, M77, M80, M81, M90z, M91, M91p

If certain input files are used to author a disc with DVD Movie Factory, the application may hang or crash while transcoding the video.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkStation C20, C20x, E20, E30
  • ThinkCentre A85, M70z, M71z, M77, M80, M81, M90z, M91, M91p

Applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

The system is configured with a DVD-RW or Blu-ray drive.

Additional Information:

This issue typically happens with WMV or MPG files that are encoded with WMV9 or VC1 format. Windows XP does not contain a codec for them. The in-box Windows XP WMV codec is unable to discriminate that the files are incompatible. The codec fails in an unpredictable manner when unexpected input from the files is encountered. DVD Movie Factory is not notified when the codec crashes, so it cannot respond to the error.

Microsoft provides VC1/WMV9 codec as part of the Windows Media Format 11 SDK (current update), the retail version of Windows Media Player 11 (older), and the VC1 DMO codec pack (obsolete). User should install one of these components if he plans on transcoding VC1 or WMV9 files under Windows XP.

Obtain Windows Media Format SDK from Microsoft.

Pick input files that Windows XP supports.
