Data Transfer Problems Under Windows XP or Windows Vista When Hard Drive in the Ultrabay Hard Drive Bay Adapter is Excluded from the Boot Order in System BIOS - ThinkPad R60, R60e, R61, R61e, R61i, T60, T60p, T61, T61p
Symptom

When the hard drive in the Ultrabay Hard Drive Bay Adapter is set to be excluded from the BIOS Boot Priority Order, Windows will misconfigure the hard drive and the user may experience data transfer problems to or from this hard drive.

Affected configurations

Any of the following Lenovo systems running Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows XP:

  • ThinkPad R60, R60e
  • ThinkPad R61, R61e, R61i
  • ThinkPad T60, T60p
  • ThinkPad T61, T61p
Solution

The default setting in the BIOS setup menu is to include the secondary hard drive in the Ultrabay Hard Drive Bay in the Boot Order, and so by default the hard drive will be correctly initialized using UltraDMA mode. When the hard drive is excluded in the Boot Priority Order, system BIOS does not initialize the hard drive in BIOS, and the operating system instead misconfigures the hard drive. This misconfiguring can lead to the symptoms above.

Ensure that the hard drive in the Ultrabay Hard Drive Bay Adapter is not excluded from the boot order in BIOS. Follow the instructions provided to check the boot order:

  1. Press F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen on boot of the system.
  2. Select Startup, then Boot.
  3. If the Ultrabay hard drive (typically listed as "ATA HDD1") is not intended to be booted from, make it the last item in the Boot Priority Order list. Do not exclude the drive from the boot order.
