This article introduces 9 services that are recommended not to be stopped in Windows 7. Backup before optimizing your services is strongly recommended.
The above symptom may occur on the following operating systems:
Microsoft Windows 7
1. DNS Client
If DNS Client service is stopped, it will continue to resolve DNS name. Then, it will not cache the inquiry result of DNS name and register computer name. If you stop this service, you computer will not be able to resolve DNS information or logon website using domain name.
2. Network Connections
In the “Network and Dial-up Connections” folder, you can view LAN and remote connections. If you stop this service, you will not be able to configure the network, create network connection or access to the internet.
3. Plug and Play
It enables the computer to recognize and adopt to the hardware changes with little or no user input. Stopping or disabling this service will result in system instability.
4. Print Spooler
This is printing service. It loads files to memory for later printing.
5. Remote Procedure Call
The RPCSS service is the Service Control Manager for COM and DCOM servers. It performs object activations requests, object exporter resolutions and distributed garbage collection for COM and DCOM servers. If this service is stopped or disabled, programs using COM or DCOM will not function properly. It is strongly recommended that you have the RPCSS service running. Stopping it, you system will not be able to start.
Creates and maintains client network connections to remote servers using the SMB protocol. If this service is stopped, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. If this service is disabled, your computer will disappear in the intranet.
7. Network Location Awareness
Collects and sto
res configuration information for the network and notifies programs when this information is modified. If this service is stopped, configuration information might be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services explicitly depend on it will fail to start. It is WLAN connection. Disabling it, something weird will happen.
8. DHCP Client
Registers and updates IP addresses. If this service is stopped, this computer will not receive dynamic IP addresses and DNS updates. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. Then, you have to set IP manually.
9. Cryptographic Services
Adds and removes Trusted Root Certification Authority certificates from this computer; Automatic Root Certificate Update Service, which retrieves root certificates from Windows Update and enable scenarios such as SSL; and Key Service, which helps enroll this computer for certificate. If this service is stopped, these management services will not function normally. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. Prohibiting the cryptographic services will result in declining of Computer security index.
