Windows RIS fails with Blue Screen errors when deploying images - ThinkPad R61, T61 and X61
Symptom
When using Windows RIS or WDS to deploy Windows XP images to later generation Lenovo Thinkpads, the deploy will fail immediately upon RIS boot or first reboot after deploy.
This scenario is a limitation of RIS in that it uses Windows XP flat images as starting point. that flat image does not contain the correct USB files. The required files can be obtained from a Windows XP preload of the listed machines.
Affected configurations
Any of the following systems running Microsoft Windows XP:
ThinkPad R61
ThinkPad T61
ThinkPad X61
Solution
Please perform the following steps to solve the issue faced:
Make all the image changes to the system in preparation for RIPREP. NOTE: The I386 folder must remain in the Lenovo Preload.
RIPREP the solution and make any changes to the Reprep.sif file that are normally performed for their processes.
Copy USBHUB.SYS, USEHCI.SYS and USBUHCI.SYS file (these files are in Windows\system32\Drivers directory of the captured image) into \\%SERVERNAME%\RemInst\Setup\English\IMAGES\Applicable image name\i386\Mirror1\UserData\I386 where Applicable image name is replaced with the name used when RIPREP was ran.
Delete USBHUB.SY_, USEHCI.SY_ and USBUHCI.SY_ files from the same directory.
Edit RIPREP.SIF file in \\%SERVERNAME%\RemInst\Setup\English\IMAGES\Applicable image name\I386\Templates\Riprep.sif. Modify the following lines, by changing the lines that are in RED below to BLUE. Please ensure that the Applicable image name is the same with the image name used in \\%SERVERNAME%\RemInst\Setup\English\IMAGES\.
