This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below.

This release supports the following system:
- ThinkPad s31

The supported operating systems are as follows:
- Windows Me
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP (Home and Professional)

NOTE: This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

I. Summary of changes
Version 1.82 - 18ET82WW
  • (Fix) Beep sound may not work.
  • (Fix) The system does not boot from the USB diskette drive after you exchange from TEAC to Y-E Data/SONY model, or vice versa.
    • IBM External USB Floppy Disk Drive (TEAC) (Field replaceable unit (FRU) part number (P/N) 05K9283)
    • USB Portable Diskette Drive (TEAC) (FRU P/N 22P7066)
    • USB Portable Diskette Drive(Y-E Data/SONY) (FRU P/N 06P5221 or 06P5223)
  • (Fix) (Windows Me) Fan never stops.
II. Installation instructions
Notes:
  • As written on LANClient Control Manager (LCCM) Compatibility and Configuration Guide, remove the Power-on password prior to flashing the BIOS in LCCM environment.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.
  • If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  • If a USB diskette drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding.
  1. Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  3. Start Microsoft Windows Me or start Microsoft Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer.
  4. Make the temporary directory on the hard disk drive (for instance, C:\Temp)
  5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory.
  6. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  7. In the Open dialog box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (For example: C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then click OK.
  8. Follow the instructions. Windows will shut down automatically and the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears.
  9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
  10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  11. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen.

    Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the computer while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

    After the update has been completed, the system will restart and enter IBM BIOS Setup Utility automatically. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  12. Press the F9 key.
  13. Select Yes to load default configuration.
  14. Press the F10 key.
  15. Select Yes.
  16. The system restarts automatically.
III. BIOS information
Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following system program (BIOS). The BIOS Version and the date can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configurator from your operating system and selecting the System Information button or by invoking IBM BIOS Setup Utility.
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Check BIOS version and BIOS date.

IV. Memory Map information
Reserved area
The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system program (BIOS) and others.
  • C0000-CBFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS
  • E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS

Usable area
The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.

  • CC000-DFFFF

But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus controllers by operating systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each operating system.
