Microsoft Windows XP limitations - ThinkPad 390

This tip contains the limitations for the specific models listed in the affected configurations section in each symptom, however there are more limitations that apply to these and all ThinkPad systems that support Windows XP. Click here to view the Windows XP limitations for all ThinkPad systems.

I. Power Management

  • Symptom
    The system resumes from Standby state when attaching or detaching the AC adapter.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 systems

    Solution
    Do not attach or detach the AC adapter while the system is in this sleep state.

    Additional information
    This is a hardware limitation. Normally, the system will resume by activity such as waking the system by using the USB input device.

  • Symptom
    After installing a PCMCIA modem and resuming from hibernation, the modem will not be functional for approximately 30 to 60 seconds.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 systems

    Solution
    After resuming from hibernation, wait 30 to 60 seconds before attempting to use the PCMCIA modem.

    Additional information
    This is a hardware limitation due to the speed of the machine.

II. USB and device support

  • Symptom
    Unable to play a DVD through auto play with the USB connected UltraBay 2000 (PCMCIA functions properly).

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 and 390X systems

    Solution

    Run DVD Express manually through the start menu and the DVD will play.

    Additional information
    This is currently being investigated.

  • Symptom
    The Port Replicator with the EtherJet PCMCIA slots do not function after a warm dock.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 systems

    Solution

    This is currently being investigated.

Additional information
This is a BIOS hardware limitation.

  • Symptom
    The Intel Pro/100 10/100 LAN+56K modem card does not dial after warm docking.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 and 390X systems

    Solution
    Cold dock the system in order to use modem half of the card.

    Additional information
    This is a hardware driver defect for this PCMCIA card.

  • Symptom
    When the user upgrade Windows XP over Windows 98 , PC card does not work after the suspend/resume during the system is in dock.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390X systems

    Solution
    Nothing

    Additional information
    This is currently being investigated.

  • Symptom
    16bit PCMCIA cards do not work by hot plug-in after the system is turned on (COM3 appears and gets Yellow Bang in Device Manager). After restart, COM3 disappears and 16bit PCMCIA card works by hot plug-in.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 systems

    Solution
    Do the following instructions:
    1. Download the Windows XP Supplement file and run the registry patch(CHGIRQ.REG) in this diskette. Then 16bit PCMCIA cards work after hot plug-in, but COM3 still appears and gets Yellow Bang every cold boot. To avoid the COM3 issue continue with the following instructions to uninstall COM3 in Device Manager.
    2. Start the system and logon with administrator ID.
    3. Click Start, select Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon.
    4. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
    5. Select COM3 marked with Yellow Bang and right-click it.
    6. Select Uninstall from the pop-up menu.
    7. Click OK to the displayed warning message: "You are about to uninstall this device from your system."

    This is currently being investigated.

  • Symptom
    Audio function cannot be used after restart when 16bit PCMCIA card is inserted. Then NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV Audio Driver (WDM) gets Yellow Bang in Device Manager.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 systems

    Solution
    Download the Windows XP Supplement file and run the registry patch (CHGIRQ.REG) in this diskette.

IV. Communication

  • Symptom
    IBM PCMCIA 56k modem (part number 02K4249) requires reboot after hot insertion.

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390 systems

    Solution
    Reboot the machine or insert IBM PCMCIA 56k modem before powering up.

    Additional information
    This is a hardware limitation to Windows XP.

V. Miscellaneous

  • Symptom
    Windows File Protection Error happens when installing ThinkPad Utility in case of upgrading Windows XP over Windows NT 4.0, and the user is queried to mount Windows XP compact disc (CD).

    Affected configurations
    All ThinkPad 390X systems

    Solution
    Nothing, even though ignoring this message, the ThinkPad Utility can be installed correctly. Also when you uninstall ThinkPad Utility and reinstall it again, there is no such message and ThinkPad Utility can be installed correctly.
