Blue Screen STOP: 0x7E occurs when formatting the 2nd HDD partition - ThinkCentre A57e, A58, A62, M58, M58e, M58p / ThinkStation D10, S10, S20
Symptom

STOP: 0x7E occurs when formatting the 2nd HDD partition by right clicking the partition icon in My Computer with McAfee installed.

Affected configurations

Any of the following systems running Microsoft Windows XP Professional, but not limited to the following:

  • All ThinkStation D10, S10, S20 systems.
  • ThinkCentre A57e (type 6303)
  • ThinkCentre A58 (type 7515, 7522, 7523, 7560, 7569, 7610, 7611, 7705, 7706, 7715, 7718, 7719, 7721, 7749, 7773, 7774, 7799)
  • ThinkCentre A62 (type 7057, 7061, 7062, 7090, 7092, 9342, 9344, 9353, 9354, 9421, 9426, 9485, 9486, 9623, 9624, 9625, 9705, 9707, 9786, 9787, 9795, 9804, 9935, 9945, 9946, 9953)
  • ThinkCentre M58 (type 6139, 6175, 6239, 6258, 6302, 6303, 7174, 7187, 7244, 7354, 7348, 7355, 7359, 7360, 7373, 7626, 7627, 7628, 7637, 7638, 7639, 8820, 8910, 9960)
  • ThinkCentre M58e (type 7258, 7259, 7260, 7267, 7268, 7269, 7270, 7279, 7280, 7290, 7296, 7298, 7303, 7304, 7306, 7307, 7408, 7413, 7487, 7491, 7506, 7508, 7514)

Solution

McAfee is aware of the issue. A fix will be available through auto updates. When the user is connected to the internet, they will receive the McAfee update automatically.

Workaround

Use Disk Management to partition and format the hard drive.
