Norton AntiVirus detected an unknown virus "bloodhound.mbr" - IBM Rescue and Recovery

Symptom

Norton AntiVirus 2004 virus scan reports it has detected an unknown virus, "bloodhound.mbr". Norton AntiVirus (NAV) has the ability to detect unknown viruses of various types using heuristic algorithms known as Bloodhound.

Affected configurations

Any IBM system running Microsoft Windows XP configured with IBM Rescue and Recovery and Norton AntiVirus 2004 with Bloodhound set at the highest level of protection

Solution

Configure your Bloodhound heuristics to the default setting.

Start Norton AntiVirus.
Click Options.
Click Auto-Protect.
Click Bloodhound.
Click Default level of protection (recommended).
Click OK.
Repeat steps 3-6 for Manual Scan.
In step 3, substitute Manual Scan for Auto-Protect.
Exit Norton Anti-Virus
