Error Message when deploying to Thinkpad computers with MDT or SCCM 2007 as deployment methodology - ThinkPad

When deploying images to Thinkpad computers using MDT or SCCM 2007, users may see the error message "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer's hardware."


Affected configurations

Any of the following Lenovo Thinkpad with Advanced Format ( AF ) Hard Disk Drives:

  • Edge E120, Edge E125, Edge E220s, Edge E320, Edge E325
  • Edge E420, Edge E420s, Edge E425, Edge E520, Edge E525
  • L420, L421, L520
  • T420, T420i, T420s, T420si, T520, T520i
  • W520
  • X1, X121e
  • X220, X220i, X220 Tablet, X220i Tablet



Check to verify the HDD in the target system is not a new 4K cluster size hard disk drive. The drive has a AF label in the center of the drive. If the drive is the 4K drive, then apply Microsoft's KB92018 hotfix.

There are 2 required patches for WinPE 3.0 boot WIM and the Windows Off Line WIM image that have to be applied to allow SCCM to deploy to 4k drives correctly. Microsoft has published the update and it is publically available at the links posted below. The Advanced Format hard drives have a 4096 bytes ( 4K ) cluster size, whereas older drives have a 512 byes ( 512K ) cluster size. This cluster size change.

In order to use AF drives in an SCCM deployment, there are several patches that have to be applied. The first is Microsoft’s KB982018. This patch must be applied to SCCM's WinPE 3.0 boot media. Be sure to also add the appropriate KB982018 patches to the Windows 7 OS image being deployed. SCCM 2007 provides WinPE 2.0, the latest WinPE 3.0 is available from Microsoft in the Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 ( WAIK).
