Upgrade program from Office 2007 to Office 2010
Upgrades are available at no additioinal cost for certain customers who purchase, install, and activate a qualifying Office 2007 product between March 5, 2010, and September 30, 2010.
On October 31, 2010, the Office 2007 upgrade to 2010 program ends and redemption and code download is not available after that date. For more details and an FAQ see Microsoft Office 2010 Technology Guarantee
What if I need to reinstall a version of MS Office I previously purchased, and I don't have the CD's? What if I can't find my product key?
For general information please see Microsoft's tip on installation and product keys. For Office 2010 specifically, see Get a backup of Office 2010
Office 2010 Delivery options to customers
Lenovo is using an MS Office 2010 Ready preload image which contains all three Office 2010 suites in one package. Customers activate the version they want with a product key they have previously purchased from Lenovo or can purchase on-line anytime as well.

Service tip: Installing Office 2010 Starter causes an R: drive to be seen but cannot be accessed in Windows Explorer. The Office Starter image is loaded within a protected virtual space where the Office Starter bits are stored, and it's signified by the R: drive. The R: drive allows for automatic updates to the Office code, keeping customers up to date. The R: drive itself does not actually take up any significant harddrive space. However the underlying files related to the R: drive virtual space do. To regain all hard drive space associated with Office 2010 Starter, if the user will not be using Office at all, use add/remove programs to remove "Microsoft Office 2010", "Microsoft Office Click to Run" and "Microsoft Office Starter 2010."
NOTE: The user will no longer be able to run Office 2010 or recover it without using Lenovo software recovery dvds.
Note: The R: drive on Lenovo PCs must be free for Office 2010 Starter to run. There are no exceptions. All other PC manufacturers have the same requirement except their required drive is Q: or R:. Additional information is in Microsoft KB articles KB982284 and KB982434.

Add/Remove Program Entry

"Microsoft Office 2010" as seen in Start--> Programs

  • This removes "Microsoft Office 2010 Starter" and users will NOT be able to use the limited feature version of Office that includes Word and Excel functionality.

"Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010"

  • This removes "Microsoft Office 2010 Starter" and the Click-to-Run foundation, including the R: drive. Users will NOT be able to use the limited feature version of Office that includes Word and Excel functionality. However, it will NOT remove the "Microsoft Office 2010" as seen in Start --> Programs. Since "Microsoft Office 2010" remains users can go back and run it to reinstall Office 2010 Starter and regain function.

"Microsoft Office Starter 2010"

  • This will only remove Microsoft Office Starter 2010. The Click-to-Run foundation and "Microsoft Office 2010" as seen in Start--> Programs will still be present. Users can therefore reinstall Office 2010 Starter if desired.
Note: If the user will not be using Office at all, use add/remove programs to remove Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft Office Click to Run and Microsoft Office Starter 2010. NOTE: The user will no longer be able to run Office 2010 or recover it without using system recovery dvds.
