System may fail to complete post - ThinkCentre A61, A62, A63, M57, M57p, M58, M58p, M90, M90p, ThinkStation S10, S20, D10, D20, E20, ThinkServer TS200v

When the user depresses the power button, the system may fail to complete post and may only hear the fans running at high speed.

Affected configurations

Any of the following systems but not limited to the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre A61 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre A62 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre A63 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M57 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M57p (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M58 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M58p (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M90 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M90p (all models)
  • ThinkStation D10 (all models)
  • ThinkStation D20 (all models)
  • ThinkStation E20 (all models)
  • ThinkStation S10 (all models)
  • ThinkStation S20 (all models)

Note: The system is configured with a defective PCI Adapter.

Additional Information:

Startup and booting are synonymous terms referring to the time just after the computer has been powered on by using the power switch from a completely powered off condition.

Troubleshooting startup issues assumes the system has some indication of power, and the power-on self test (POST) may or may not complete successfully. The system does not completely boot to the operating system desktop or a DOS prompt.

A defective PCI adapter can cause many different types of startup anomalies from no video, beep error codes, internal fans running at high speed and the system fails to complete POST.


If this issue is found to be caused by a defective PCI adapter, replace the adapter.


Remove the PCI adapter from the system until replaced with known working PCI adapter.
