Security settings: Windows 7 Group Policy prohibits direct running of USB devices and prevents U disk virus

AFFECTED CONFIGUTATIONS:

The above symptom may occur on the following operating systems

Microsoft Windows 7

VALID REGIONS/COUNTRIES:

Worldwide

SOLUTIONS:

1. Insert a USB device in PC. After the device is in normal use, click "Start" --> "Control Panel" --> "Hardware and Sound" --> "Devices and Printers" and you can see all the devices in the opening window.

Right-click on a USB device and select "Properties". In "Properties" window, click "Hardware" --> "Properties" --> "Details" --> "Hardware Id(s)". Copy and paste the ID code to a Text Document.

2. Click "Control Panel" --> "Hardware and Sound" --> "Device Manager" --> "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Right-click on "USB Mass Storage Device" and choose "Properties". In "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" , click "Details". Copy and paste the ID code to a Text Document.

3. Open "Run" and enter "gpedit.msc", "Local Group Policy Editor" will pop up. Locate "Computer Configuration" --> "Administrative Templates" --> "System" --> "Device Installation" --> "Device Installation Restrictions". Click "Allow installation of devices that match any of these device IDs" in the right panel --> "Policy settings". Check "Enabled" and click "Show…". Copy and paste the device IDs in Text Document to the popup window and click "OK" to save the settings. See Fig.5 and Fig.6.

4. Click "Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings" --> "Policy settings". Check "Enabled" and click "OK" to save the settings.

The Group Policy settings above prohibit USB devices running and ensure the security of Windows 7 in terms of USB virus intrusion.
