System Reboots while idle - ThinkCentre M90z
Symptom

System Reboots while idle. An event 41 is logged in the event log, but does not have any detailed information.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre M90z

Applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Additional Information:

The details for an event 41 should show a bugcheck code of 0, All bugcheck parameters should be 0, and the power button timestamp should be 0 for this TIP to be applicable. Please see attached screen shot:

Solution

If the systems CPU is stepping level "K0", update the BIOS to correct the above symptom.
For M90z, update to 38A BIOS or later version. Currently 9BKT41A is available on the Lenovo support site.

Do not replace any hardware.

Workaround:

If the system memory configuration is using Hynix memory, date code prior to 1049, but without stepping level "K0" CPU, use the workaround shown below to correct the issue.

  1. Power on the machine and press F1 to enter into the BIOS setup screen.
  2. Move to the "Advanced" tab in the blue line at the top of the screen by using the left / right arrow keys on the keyboard.
  3. Use the down arrow key to highlight the "CPU Setup" item.
  4. Press the "enter" key to enter the CPU Setup Menu.
  5. Use the down arrow key to highlight the "C State Support" item. Press the + key on the numeric key pad twice to change the setting from C1C3C6 to C1.
  6. Press the F10 key to enter the "Save Configuration and Exit" screen. Press the enter key to complete the save operation and reboot the machine.
  7. Allow the machine to reboot and come to the desktop.
  8. Verify correct operation of the machine.
