System cannot boot to the next device after PXE boot times out - ThinkCentre, ThinkStation



The system is configured to boot to PXE first and then the hard disk drive.  The user turns the system on and it fails to PXE boot or the user presses Escape to abort the PXE boot.  The boot sequence continues to the next device and the system hangs.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre M72e, Edge 72e, M82, M92, M92p, Edge 92
  • ThinkStation E31
Operating Systems
  • All Operating Systems

The user should update the BIOS as applicable below:

ThinkCentre M72e:

F1KT52A (or higher) / F4KT40A (or higher):

ThinkCentre Edge 72e:

F1KT52A (or higher):

Please click here to update the BIOS.

ThinkCentre M82/ M92/ M92p/ Edge 92:

9SKT68A (or higher):

Please click here to update the BIOS.

ThinkStation E31:

9SKT68A (or higher)

Please click here to update the BIOS.

Perform the following after updating the BIOS:

  1. In BIOS Setup (F1), go to the “Startup” screen.
  2. Set “Boot Mode” to “Legacy Only”.
  3. Press F10 and Enter to Save and Exit.
Additional Information

The PXE boot image is not a UEFI image.
