This package installs the software (Storage driver) to enable the followingvdevices:

  • Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller

Note:
Please refer to the README file under the "File details" section for a complete list of changes fixed by this driver update.

Notes

A Blue Screen error will come up on the Windows preload when these models boot with "Compatible" mode instead of "AHCI" that is modified from the BIOS Setup/ Config/Serial SATA menu. This is caused by an absence of a compatible driver on the Windows preload. Stay "AHCI" mode when you boot Windows preload.

 

Installation instructions

Note:

  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Version Information section.
Manual Install

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Select the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click the Save button. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Extracting file]

  1. Make sure to be logged on with administrative privileges.
  2. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded.
  3. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. In the "Select Destination Location" window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  6. In the "Ready to Install" window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in Extracting File Step 9.
  7. Uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then click Finish to complete extraction.

Delete the file saved in the step 4.

[Installing files]

  1. Click Start.
  2. [Windows 7/Vista]
    Right-click Computer, and then click Properties. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
    [Windows XP]
    Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  3. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category.
  4. Double-click either of the following devices.
    • Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
    • Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller
  5. Click the Driver tab, then click Update Driver Software....
  6. Click Browse my computer for driver software.
  7. Click Browse..., then point to driver location specified in Step 9.
  8. Make sure the checkbox next to "Include subfolders" is checked and click Next.
  9. Click Close when the installation has completed.
  10. Click Yes to restart the computer.
Windows XP Clean Install

Before installing the operating system, install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, as follows:

Notes:

  • Be sure to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver before installing the operating system. Otherwise your computer will not respond; it will only display a blue screen.
  • In RAID mode, the following procedures is the ONLY procedure to install Windows XP successfully.
  1. Attach a floppy disk drive to your computer.
  2. Download Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Web site and extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST and copy the driver to a floppy disk.
  3. Make sure that SATA AHCI or RAID is enabled;
    1. Power off the computer.
    2. Power on the computer.
    3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
    4. Select Config.
    5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
    6. Make sure RAID* or AHCI is selected.
      (* ThinkPad W510 only)
    7. Press the F3 key, and then press the F3 key to go back to main menu.
  4. Make sure that Operating System can be installed from Windows XP CD;
    1. Select Startup.
    2. Select Boot.
    3. In Boot Priority Order, set "ATAPI CD0": to the top of the list, "1".
    4. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes.
      The computer will restart.
  5. Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive, and restart the computer.
  6. To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press F6.
  7. When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device.
  8. When prompted, insert the floppy disk that you created in step 2, and press Enter.
  9. - If your system has Intel 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller, select Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
    - If your system has Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller, select Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
    - If you selected RAID mode, select Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/5 Series SATA RAID Controller, and press Enter.
    - If your system has Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller, select Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter.
  10. To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the floppy disk in the drive until the next reboot; the software may need to be copied from the floppy disk again when the files are copied during setup.
  11. Follow the instruction to complete the Operating System installation.

If you do not have a floppy disk drive, you can install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver by the following alternative procedure (applicable to other SATA settings except RAID):

NOTE: If you select AHCI for Serial ATA (SATA) in the BIOS Setup Utility before installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, your computer will not respond; it will only display a blue screen.

  1. Power off the computer.
  2. Power on the computer.
  3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Select Config.
  5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
  6. Select Compatibility.
  7. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Install Windows XP and Service Pack 2.
  10. Download Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Web site and extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST.
  11. Go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST\PREPARE, and double-click install.cmd.
  12. Power off and on the computer.
  13. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  14. Select Config.
  15. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
  16. Select AHCI.
  17. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will reboot and Windows XP will start.
  18. The "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard" appears. Click No, not this time, and then click Next.
  19. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
  20. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Then select Include this location in the search:, specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST, and click Next. The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" appears.
  21. Click Finish.
  22. When the "System Settings Change" window appears, click Yes. The computer restarts.
Windows XP Update Install
  1. Start Windows XP.
  2. Click Start and Control Panel.
  3. Click Performance and Maintenance and System.
  4. Click Hardware tab.
  5. Click Device Manager button.
  6. Click the + mark to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category.
  7. Right-click either of the following devices and then and click Properties;
    • Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller
  8. Click Driver tab.
  9. Click Update Driver button.
  10. Select No, not this time and click Next.
  11. Select Install from a list or specific location.
  12. Click Next button.
  13. Select Search for the best driver in these locations and Include this location in the search.
  14. Click Browse button.
  15. Locate the driver folder and click OK button.
  16. Click Next button. The driver installation starts.
  17. Click Finish button when the installation completes.
  18. Click Close button.

 

Determining which Version is Installed

To check the version of the device driver that is installed on your system, follow these instructions:

[Windows 7/Vista]

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click Computer and click Properties.
  3. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
  4. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category.
  5. Double-click either of the following devices;
    • Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller
  6. Click the Driver tab.
  7. Check Driver Version.

[Windows XP]

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer and click Properties.
  3. Click the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager button.
  4. Double-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category.
  5. Double-click either of the following devices;
    • Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller
    • Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller
  6. Click the Driver tab.
  7. Check Driver Version.
