User may see lower than expected available usable memory size (2.49GB available) on Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7 32bit even if the installed memory is larger than 4GB - ThinkCentre M78

Symptom

The user may see lower than expected available memory size (2.49GB available) on the Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7 Control Panel even if the installed memory is larger than 4GB

Affected Configurations

The above symptom is associated with the following systems:

  • Only for ThinkCentre M78 running 32bit versions of either Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7

System is configured with:

  1. 4GB or more of physical memory installed
  2. ThinkCentre M78 running Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7 32bit (64bit is not affected)
Applies to
  • Microsoft Windows 7 (32bit)
  • Microsoft Windows XP (32bit)
Limitations

For 32bit versions of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7, the maximum memory that can be addressed is 2^32=4GB of RAM.  This RAM is shared by several parts of the system including the onboard graphic solution as well as several different kinds of PCI, ROM, and RAM components on the motherboard.  The remaining unaddressed memory is available to the system for general usage.

Solution

The user should update the ThinkCentre M78 system BIOS to version 9ZKT37A, or later.  This new system BIOS contains a change to increase the available system memory to 3.0GB.
