Systems using AHCI/RAID may show Event ID 9 IASTOR error in system event log - ThinkCentre M58/M58p

Symptom

Users may find an Event 9 IASTOR error logged in the system event log. Error Message: "This device. \Device\Ide\iaStor0 did not respond within the timeout period."

Intel has provided the following explanation of the functionality of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver in relationship to these errors:

Intermittent appearance of Event 9 iastor errors in the Windows System Event Log may not indicate a cause for concern. The Event 9 error indicates that the Intel Storage Matrix driver forwarded a command to the target device that did not respond within a specified timeout period. A single Event 9 error indicates that the command was successfully retried by the driver and an acknowledgement returned by the target device.

Once the host issues the command, these command timeouts are contained totally within the command processing structure of the driver until the command is completed. The host is unaware of what is happening at the driver level and continues its normal processing activities until the driver notifies it of the command completion (or failure if it fails the retries). Therefore, there are no system hangs, no system crashes, and no measurable degradation to the system during the driver’s processing of the command. The only indication of there being any issue is the driver reporting the command timeout error to the Windows System Event Log to indicate that the target device did not respond within the allotted time on the driver’s first attempt to pass the command to the target device.

Affected configurations

Any of the following systems running Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, XP Home Edition but not limited to the following:

  • ThinkCentre: M58, M58p (all models)

Note: The system is configured with: Intel Matrix Storage Driver 8.9.1023

Limitations

This issue may be addressed in a later release of the Intel Storage Matrix Driver. The current driver level that still shows this behavior is 8.9.1023.
