After installing the Client Security Solution 8.3 program on a Lenovo computer with the Windows 7 operating system preloaded, no entry and icon of the program can be found on the Start menu and in Control Panel

Symptom

After downloading and installing the ThinkVantage(R) Client Security Solution 8.3 program on a Lenovo(R) computer with the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 7 operating system preloaded, no entry and icon of the program can be found on the Start menu and in Control Panel.

Affected configurations

All ThinkPad(R) computers with the Windows 7 operating system and the Web release version of the Client Security Solution 8.3 program or later installed.

Solution

This is a designed behavior, and has no impact on system performance.

The following provides some background information about the Client Security Solution program. This information applies to Client Security Solution 8.1 or later.

Users can install the Client Security Solution program either in full function mode or in Password Manager only mode. Even if users upgrade to a later version of the program, the previous installation mode will stay the same. Therefore, the following two scenarios exist:

  • If users install the Client Security Solution program in Password Manager only mode, which is set by default on the Lenovo computer with the Windows 7 operating system preloaded, then after upgrading, the program will be still in Password Manager only mode. Therefore, users could not see the entry and the icon of the Client Security Solution program on the Start menu and in Control Panel.
  • If users install the Client Security Solution program in full-function mode, then after upgrading, all the features in the program will still exist on the operating system.

To change the installation mode, do the following:

  1. Uninstall the current Client Security Solution program.
  2. Manually install a later version of the Client Security Solution program.

Note: Before upgrading, be sure to export all the password entries to avoid data loss.

To install the Client Security Solution program in Password Manager only mode, do the following:

  1. Click Start -> Run. Type cmd, and click OK.
  2. Type the following commands at the command prompt:
    css83_ww.exe /s /v"/qn pwmgrmode=1 CREATESHORTCUT=1 emulationmode=1 reboot="r""

Notes:

  1. Set pwmgrmode=1 to install the Client Security Solution program in Password Manager only mode.
  2. Set CREATESHORTCUT=1 to add an entry of the Client Security Solution program under the ThinkVantage folder on the Start menu.
  3. Set emulationmode=1 to install the Client Security Solution program in software-based TPM (Trusted Platform Module) emulation mode.
  4. Set reboot="r" to avoid restarting the operating system.
