WMI cannot retrieve serial number from LT2452p monitor

Symptom

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) cannot retrieve the serial number from the LT2452p monitor.  Using WMI to retrieve the serial number from the monitor results in a random number being returned.

Affected configurations

The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

  • ThinkCentre
  • ThinkStation
  • ThinkServer
  • ThinkPad
  • Idea Tablet
  • IdeaPad
  • IdeaCentre

The system is configured with:

  • LT2452p LCD monitor

Applies to:

  • All Operating Systems
Additional Information

EDID Explanation:

Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) developed a standard for Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) which is transmitted to the PC system to detail the capabilities of the monitor using Plug and Play.  The data includes manufacturer name, serial number, product type, timings, display size, luminance data, color information, and pixel mapping.

As very few monitors use a 4-digit serial number, the field defined in EDID is inadequate to store typical serial numbers, therefore, a workaround was developed which is used on most monitors shipping today.  A secondary data field used for monitors requiring special timing data, required by a small number of monitors, was defined as an alternative location for the serial number.  As most monitors use that location for serial number information, all EDID software looks at that location for the serial number including WMI.

LT2452p EDID:

The LT2452p monitor supports a 1920x1080 at 60Hz mode which is required to be stored in the secondary timing section of the EDID and, therefore, it is not available for storage of the 7-digit serial number.
Data recovered by standard EDID software is a portion of the timing information and not related to the serial number such as when using WMI.

The last four digits of the serial number are stored in the original serial number location in EDID, which are bytes 12 though 15 of the EDID data as defined by the specification.  As an example, the first three characters of the serial number for LT2452p displays is “VNA” and if this is appended in front of the four digits found in the EDID data then the serial number of the LT2452p monitor can be determined.
