This package updates two sets of the BIOSes (including system programs and Embedded Controller programs) stored in the following ThinkPad computers to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below:

  • BIOS ID 6Zxxxxxx-based computer (Upper two alphanumeric characters of BIOS ID are 6Z)
  • BIOS ID 6Yxxxxxx-based computer (Upper two alphanumeric characters of BIOS ID are 6Y)

  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where incorrect Embedded Controller version might be shown in SMBIOS Type 0 and 11.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where maintenance USB key with over 2 GB might not be booted.
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where Windows Power Meter may show error messages when using unauthorized battery. 
  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where the wireless radio would be turned on even though it was turned off by Fn+F5 key operation when all of the following conditions were met.
    1. Press the Fn+F5 keys, then select Turn all radios off.
    2. Shut down the computer.
    3. Detach both the AC adapter and the battery, then wait for a while.
    4. Attach them and turn on the computer.

  • Fix) Fixed an issue where a beep sound might not be heard when entering standby/sleep state.

Notes
  • If you encounter system hang-up, try to remove the AC adapter and battery from the computer and then attach them to the computer again, then see how it works.
  • Some BIOS settings might be changed back to the default after BIOS update. For example, the setting of SATA Controller Mode Option is changed from Compatibility to AHCI. In this case, you need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

 

Updating the BIOS


Notes:

  • If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Determing Which Version is Installed section.
  • You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack.
  • Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment.

Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

 

Manual Install

This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Explorer.

[Downloading file]

  1. Click once on the underlined file name with the left mouse button. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click the Save button.
  4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.

[Extracting file]

  1. Make sure to be logged on with an administrator account on the target computer.
  2. Make sure the AC adapter is firmly connected to the target computer.
  3. Locate the directory where the file was downloaded.
  4. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click it.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. In the "Select Destination Location" window, click Next. If you would like to select a different folder, click Browse.
  7. In the Ready to Install window, click Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in the step 10.

[Updating the BIOS]

  1. Make sure the checkbox next to "Install ..... now" is checked and click Finish.
  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  3. Select Update ThinkPad BIOS and follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message "Flash Update has been successfully completed...". Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.

Finally delete the file saved in Step 4.

Unattended Install


Note:
This is for system administrators' use only.

  1. Refer to the "Manual Update" section, and download and extract the file.
  2. In the step 12 of the "Installing files" section, uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then click Finish to cancel installation.
  3. At the command line, execute WINUPTP.EXE with the -s option. Example: [Path where the files were extracted]\WINUPTP -s

To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package.

Initializing the BIOS

Note:
After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously.

BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings:

  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Press the F9 key (or hold down the Fn key and press the F9 key) to load default configuration.
  5. Select Yes.
  6. Press the F10 key (or hold down the Fn key and press the F10 key) to save default configuration and exit.
  7. Select Yes.
  8. Restart the computer.

 

Determining which version is installed

There are two ways to check the BIOS version and BIOS ID:

Checking on Windows

[Windows 7]

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information.
    - or -
    Click Start, type msinfo32 in the Start Search box and then click msinfo32 in the Programs list.
  2. On the "System Information" window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window.
  3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

[Windows XP]

  1. Click Start, click All programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information.
    - or -
    Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32 in the Open box and then click OK.
  2. On the "System Information" window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window.
  3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown.
Checking on BIOS Setup
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer.
  3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  4. Locate the BIOS Version line and Embedded Controller Version line. "BIOS version (BIOS ID)" will be shown on the BIOS Version line.
  5. Turn off the computer.
